In a development which may help the Margao Municipal Council to tide over the issue of bailing plastic waste, the Director of Municipal Administration (DMA) has granted administrative sanction to the civic body amounting to Rs 27.11 lakh to build a shed at Sonsodo.
DMA Dr Tariq Thomas has granted the approval to the proposal sent by the MMC with a plea to utilise the funds out of the Rs 2.15 crore grant received by the civic body from the 14th Finance Commission.
Chief Officer Sidhivinayak Naik informed that with the DMA’s office granting administrative approval for the construction of a shed at Sonsodo, bailing of plastic waste will receive a big boost at the waste dumping site.
Armed with the DMA’s order, the MMC plans to immediately float a tender inviting bids from prospective contractors to erect the shed at the waste dumping site. “Once the shed takes concrete shape, bailing of plastic waste collected by the civic body will go in full steam at Sonsodo,” Naik added.
The project is expected to bail out the MMC since the civic body was presently carrying out the exercise from the Fomento waste treatment plant.
It may be recalled that a truck load of plastic waste which was dispatched to a cement factory at Karnataka last month could not be unloaded since the waste sent was laden with moisture as the plastic waste was being bailed outside for want of a dedicated shed.
Meanwhile, the MMC chief officer told the media that the civic body will offer all cooperation to the Goa Solid Waste Management Corporation on the remediation of the existing waste at Sonsodo.
When the media drew attention of the MMC Chief Officer to the statement made by Minister Michael Lobo that the Corporation is yet to receive a reply from the MMC Chairperson and Chief Officer on allocation of space at Sonsodo for remediation of the existing waste, Naik said the Civic body will extend whatever cooperation that is sought by the Corporation to tackle the existing waste by remediation.
